Counting From Eleven to Twenty in Greek

eleven to twenty in Greek

In this blog, we will learn eleven to twenty in Greek. Building on what we’ve covered.

You already learned one through ten in Blog #9, and you put those numbers to work with money in Blog #10. Now it is time to go a little higher. Let us dive right in.

Eleven to Twenty

Once you know one through ten, the teens are easy. Greek builds them from smaller numbers. It works the same way English builds “thirteen” from “three.” Say each number out loud. Try to hear the smaller number hiding inside the bigger one.

NumberGreekHow to Say It
11έντεκαénteka
12δώδεκαthótheka
13δεκατρίαthekatría
14δεκατέσσεραthekatéssera
15δεκαπέντεthekapénte
16δεκαέξιthekaéxi
17δεκαεπτάthekaeptá
18δεκαοκτώthekaoktó
19δεκαεννέαthekaennéa

A Quick Note on Sound

The Greek letter δ still makes a soft “th” sound here, just like it did in Blog #9. Many of these number words are spelled with a “d” in English letters. But they sound softer when a Greek speaker says them.

Why This Matters

Numbers are a small part of the language, but they open a big door. You can use them to tell your age, count a group of people, or set a time to meet a friend. Practice these ten new numbers every day this week. Once they feel easy and natural, you will know all the numbers from one to twenty.
